The Rivas Family Honoring a Legacy of Dedication and Support

The Rene Rivas Scholarship was established in memory of Rene Rivas to provide financial help to students enrolled at any of the Peralta Community College District’s four campuses: Laney College, Merritt College, College of Alameda, and Berkeley City College. Rene, a dedicated employee for over 30 years, held various positions across all four campuses, including the District office, and concluded his career as the Admissions and Records Supervisor at Laney College. Rene was known for his excellent student engagement and collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrators. His legacy is celebrated through an employee of the year award and the renaming of the Laney College Classified Senate Lounge. Driven by his passion for guiding and mentoring students, Rene’s daughters Nicole, Jasmin, and Ann Marie, along with Laney’s faculty, staff, and administration, established this scholarship to ease the financial burdens of education and continue his mission.
