President’s Medallion Award Requirements
- One student from each college will be awarded the President's Medallion, receive a $1000 scholarship and entry to the Chancellor's Trophy Award.
- Each candidate must be a full-time student (graduating or transferring to a 4-year institute or professional program/school)
- Carried a minimum of 12 units per semester and completed a minimum of 36 semester units.
- Overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4.0 scale.
- Candidates should have a record of active participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities during their college attendance. Employment during this period is given proper consideration.

Berkely City College Winner
Crystal Swan
- As a child Crystal’s family moved around a lot and at points experienced homelessness due to financial instability. After graduating from high school, she had to homeschool her four younger siblings. It was during that time Crystal took them to the local library and fell in love with books. She learned about the Black History that wasn’t taught in schools and fell in love with reading and growing her mind. With her newfound passion enrolled in Berkeley City College to pursue her education and become a youth librarian. Crystal plans to earn an Associate in Arts degree in Sociology and transfer to a four-year university. She plans to complete her Bachelor's degree and earn a Master's in Library Sciences.
- As a librarian, Crystal wants to create programs in public libraries in the underserved communities for children who struggle with reading and education that will inspire them to continue learning and expanding their minds. Crystal wants to expose children to a world of knowledge and show them that they can succeed in this life contrary to their challenges in the systematic educational system.
College of Alameda Winner
Hongying “Angel” Huang
- Hongying and her family immigrated from China to the United States in 2017. She enrolled at the College of Alameda to improve her English and become a regular teacher. She is a full-time student, mother of two and the sole income provider in the family right now due to the pandemic. While juggling a variety of priorities, Hongying is a part-time Chinese teacher and a tutor at Laney College in ESOL class and Chinese classes. Hongying is pursuing an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts/Social & Behavioral Sciences. Through it all Hongying maintains a 4.0 GPA.
- Hongying plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn her bachelor's degree and teaching credential. Hongying wants to obtain a single subject teaching credential in Chinese and a multiple subject credential for elementary school.
Laney College Winner
Weihao “Warren” Huang
- In 2017, Weihao and his family immigrated from a small town in China to the United States. He never thought he could become a college student before arriving in California. Beginning a new life in the Bay Area opened up opportunities.
- Weihao Huang is pursuing an Associate in Science degree in CIS Advanced Computer Programming and plans to graduate from Laney College this spring. Besides being a full-time student, Weihao is a Chinese tutor at an Alameda afterschool club, a math tutor, IT helpdesk specialist, and Amazon delivery driver. Weihao maintains a 3.83 grade point average.
Merritt College Winner
Lilibeth Corona Meza
- Lilibeth is a full-time, first-generation college student pursuing an Associate in Arts degree in Communications. When she was younger she was unable to express herself and when she did it was negatively interpreted. Lilibeth chose this degree to become an interpreter as she always wants to help others communicate effectively. While working as the Merritt College Puente Program Club secretary she realized that there is more to it than just comprehending languages. She wants to explore all aspects of the communications major at a four-year university.
- As a single mother, this year has been especially tough as she contracted COVID-19 during the Fall finals. Despite being knocked down, she persevered and maintained a 3.87 GPA. Lilibeth has a driving force and knows that her bilingual tongue allows her to comprehend and step in when she see injustices first hand.
