PERALTA PROUD

Background

Peralta did a great job equipping me with lifelong tools, like time management and diverse communication skills. I felt prepared for my next step in both a 4-year school and the workforce by having teachers dedicated to making students learn the material and resources like EOPS and the Sankofa club.

The biggest lesson Peralta taught me was to Network. Networking is so important on all levels, after you graduate it is truly who you know not what you know and Peralta helped me understand that. The best advice I could give to any student entering the Peralta Colleges is to Network network network. You won’t regret it!

I am the first of my family to attend college and graduate. I never thought I would go to college as a young child because I did not like school and my grades were not that great. But as I got older I knew I needed to further my education, so that I can be able to provide and create a better life for me and my family. At the age of 30 years old and with two children at the time I decided to enroll at Laney College through the Welfare to work/ CalWorks program. I am a double Major studying Psychology and African American Studies.

My goal is to one day open my own private practice to serve and help my family and community. This scholarship is important to me because it will help keep this fire in my belly lit. At times I can fall back into my old thoughts thinking I am not good enough, but with awards and scholarships they help support me in many ways from financial to psychological.
